First 100 Sales: Lean Startup Thinking
Limited Capacity seats available

Lean Startup thinking offers an interesting way to build a new product, service or a startup using early feedback on key hypotheses as the way to amplify learning.

This allows entrepreneurs and product developers to build the idea incrementally - starting with an MVP, and eventually leading to the desired product. However, unlike conventional product development, we build continual feedback loops that allow us to only build on top of validated hypotheses, and pivot in case some of them happen to be incorrect.

In this session, we will examine some real-life case studies to understand how lean startup thinking could be used.

In the talk we’ll start with how to get a deeper and clearer understanding about the problem you are trying to solve and get the whole team on the same page. We’ll see how we can leverage everyone’s skills in the team to come up with great ideas (no more awkward silences in brainstorming!)

Then we’ll see how we can combine the best parts from everyone’s ideas and agree upon one concept. Once we have a single concept, we’ll see how we can actually test it with real users and get real feedback without code!

Cobalt: Cobalt's DNA = Culture driven startup ecosystem
Limited Capacity seats available

To bloom each startup ecosystem should be unique, undergoing its own challenges and evolutions. Researchers suggest that developing an entreprenuerial hotspot may depend on traditional factors like funding and technology adoption, as well as other, more unusual traits…
For instance, art = entrepreneurialism : according to the Startup Genome report, authors suggest a correlation between large art and music scenes and successful entrepreneurial ecosystems, citing the startup success in cities such as New York, San Francisco and Berlin. Can Bangalore’s startup ecosystem go beyond the obvious techie sphere to feed on the city’s cultural fibre?

Cobalt BLR is a flexible meeting & co-working space that puts serendipity @ work! We are not a business centre, we are a business shelter. We understand that an ideal workspace is not just a desk and a chair. It is about brainstorming and meeting new people as much as it is about putting in the quiet solitary hours with laser-like focus. It is about being able to look upon a vibrant street for a change of scenery while still enjoying the calm of your office.

BHive:Co-Working - the next Big-Wave for the Start-Up Community
Limited Capacity seats available

In the midst of ancient trees and the fine architectural suburban homes of Koramangala, B Hive – an entrepreneurial ecosystem – is coming to life. The co-working space opened it’s doors to the public in early November, when Founder Sheshgiri Rao Paplikar decided to tap into a rising business opportunity in Bangalore: an entrepreneurial spark with no place to work.

Bangalore has been identified by Forbes as India’s Silicon Valley. This sudden surge of start-ups is accredited to various economic and political shifts in India. Some point to the recession, where sudden peaks in unemployement led talented employees to decide to run their own companies. Others suggest it’s the result of the rising number of tech savy and impatient millennials, who make up 60 percent of India’s population, looking to make an impact with their career without having to work up the hierarchy of bureaucracy. And finally some suggest that Prime Minister Narendra Modi is behind it all, welcoming foreign investments and making opening ones own business administratively more easy.

What ever the cause, more and more young professionals are turning to entrepreneurship as a means of furthering their careers. However, where does a bunch of entrepreneurs go to find affordable and supportive work-space?

B Hive is stepping forth as a solution. It’s providing some of the most affordable work-spaces in the whole city and aspires to be one of the largest co-working spaces in all of Bangalore. Having only opened the Kormangala center two months ago, B Hive is soon to open another center in Indira Nagar.

When you walk through the space you find young millennials hunched over their laptops. And a simple hello has them quickly opening up about their aspirations to make a mark in the start up world.

And B Hive is working as hard as they can to ensure these entrepreneurs are ensured success. Weekly events are held were experts from across the city drop by to share the essentials for ensuring businesses thrive.

Nilenso: Technology Co-operatives: What, Why, How
Limited Capacity seats available

We have been running nilenso (nilenso.com) as a democratic technology co-operative for 2 years. Building and running a co-operative presents a set of challenges above and beyond building more common private businesses or partnerships. When I speak to people about nilenso and why we chose a co-operative model, I rarely even get to these challenges as part of the conversation; most people do not understand what a co-operative corporation is or why we would choose such an entity for our business.

The challenges are those of an ordinary business, but seen through a new lens. How do we hire and fire employees in an employee-owned democracy? How do we decide strategic direction? How do we market ourselves? How do we avoid bikeshedding every minor decision on one hand or letting the company slide into dictatorship on the other? How do we avoid the Tragedy of the Commons?

I intend to answer these questions as concisely as I can, using nilenso as a concrete example of these ideas in action. The goal of the talk will be to move quickly past the “what” and “why” of technology co-operatives to the “how” of implementing your own corporation in this manner.

Nilenso is a programmer's cooperative based in Bangalore.

Open Mic: Third Space and Third Sector Innovation

With market, government and societal failure on the rise there needs to be practical action on the ground, a coalition of actors and ideas must be forged to discover the alternative. My objective is to share “Third Space” as a viable option to create cultural shifts for disruptive innovation and push the future of entrepreneurship forward.

Third spaces is a term coined by Howard Shultz Chief Executive Officer of Starbucks. They are spaces that are neither home nor work, but rather something that brings the two into perfect harmony. They are usually open common spaces that bring multi-stakeholders together under one roof.

However,a third space can be so much more than a coffee shop with free wifi. Third sector innovators are developing projects to ignite collaborative community, development of action, learning and ensuring public service. These spaces, utilized effectively, can be areas that turn the average consumer into a socially conscious creator, collaborator and change-maker.

This discussion will explore third sector innovation and third spaces across the world and here in India.

San Francisco Free Space (recognized by the White House Champions for Change) which is looking at how sharing space and promoting open access could ignite civic engagement. Within one month they conducted over 164 free events and workshops. And have gone on to develop 26 centers across the world through shared properties. The project allowed for me to work with civic hackers such as Tim West a Food-Hacker who promotes healthier meals, even though his Grand Father is known as the founder of the multi-billion fast-food Dorritos Chips.

Sri Lanka Unites Reconciliation Centers ( Funded by British High Commission) aspiring to build 25 community centers across the Island. I’d be on site when British Foreign Affairs Minister William Haige visited the center during the Commonwealth Meetings in Sri Lanka. The spaces provide open-access to IT training, English and Entrepreneurial empowerment to foster lasting peace on the island by ensuring equality of opportunity across the boundaries of class, gender and ethnicity. The spaces will be based in rural under developed areas. They have a following of over 10,000 members from across the Island.

Common spaces such as Roots Hyderabad. Funded by a property owner raised in America with Indian roots, who moved back to Hyderabad to turn a family property, a four-storey building, into an open-access space with resource sharing, co-working, free-recording/music space, sustainable garden and stage. And he’s chosen a great city, as American companies Facebook, Google and Microsoft have all gravitated to this city to develop their main offices in India. And many of their employees have been dropping by the space.

OMNI Commons (Oakland) a crowd-funded project that raised 81,041. Collectives like this are proving that that there is a call for more equitable commoning of resources and ideas to meet human needs. And this project aspires to be a safe, productive space where people can pool resources towards collective use and stewardship for the greater community.

And now BHive a co-working space based in Bangalore, the Silicon Valley of India. Founder Shesh Paplikar has left his job at Bloomberg and relocated to Bangalore in order to capitalize on a growing industry in India Entrepreneurs with no where to work. He is aspiring to establish the largest network of co-working spaces for start ups across the city. In just two-months of being open they’ve brought together Harvard drop-outs, ex-employees of Silicon Valley companies and College drop outs from IIT. These individuals are sick of bureaucratic red-tape and are seeking independent businesses as a means of democratizing the economy, spreading wealth and ensuring more freedom for innovating, creating and impacting the world around them.

We’re going to look at how advances in mathematical and statistical computing have actually made this possible, and we’re going to touch upon the key problem areas one might face, when trying to use data science to answer a question of social significance.

We’re going to first talk about how various fields have come up - cliodynamics, econometrics, the like - fields that use intensive mathematical and statistical constructs, to analyze social and economic structures. We’re also going to discuss how recent advances in computing, have made - and are making - these fields blow up in terms of what they can now help us analyze and answer.

Next, we’re going to talk about key problems that a data scientist and a social scientist face, when they put their skills together to attack and analyze a particular problem statement. Broadly, these 4 areas are:
- Data - Questions - Models - Findings - Acceptance

A lot of the points we cover here, are from personal experience, as well as takeaways culled from research being undertaken across the world, in this regard.

Finally, we’re going to try out a sample problem - predicting and analyzing racial segregation using math - to get some sort of exposure to the assumptions one makes, and the consequences of said assumptions, while trying to fit human actions into a mathematical model.

Open Mic: Life Lessons of Travel

Throughout the last 5 years I have traveled to over 20 countries and lived in four different continents. Throughout this time I have learned many things about both myself and the world. Here are some of the lessons that I have learned throughout that time. (Here are some sample lessons that I have typed out…I have over 20 of these so we could choose which ones you like best)

It’s not where you’ve been, what you’ve seen, or what new things you have tried that makes traveling so special. It’s not the visiting of famous tourist destinations and crossing countries off the passport bucket list. It’s the PEOPLE you meet that make traveling so special. It’s the conversations you have. The relationships that you build. The exposure to new ways of thinking and living. The experiences that you share. This is singlehandedly the greatest thing that I have experienced through traveling.

Many times we look at moving abroad as this enormous life changing decision that will forever change the course of our lives and professional futures. While it will definitely be a life changing decision, I’ve come to realize that once we settle down in a new country our life isn’t that much different than it was in our home country that we began in. We go to work, eat some good food, have hobbies and hang out with friends. Yes there is the initial adjustment period, but oftentimes our lives aren’t THAT drastically different.

“Worrying is like a rocking chair, it gives you something to do, but it doesn’t get you anywhere.” Learn to let go of the things that are beyond your control. Worrying about things that you can’t change is a useless and unproductive activity. If you are constantly worried about all the “what if’s”, you won’t notice all of the great things right under your nose. If you can’t control it, don’t bother thinking about it. Stop worrying, start LIVING. If you can control it, take ACTION.

Launchpad: Hobby In a Box

In India a person who wishes to follow crafts and hobbies faces two major problems.
1) Getting right raw materials
2 )Getting right guidance

Why raw materials is problem ?
a) Indian craft market is very fragmented
b) You have to buy raw materials in bulk
c) You can never be sure of the quality as there is no branding

Why right guidance is problem ?
a) Hobby classes are expensive and not flexible
b) You would have to travel long distances to get materials/guidance (time consuming)
c) YouTube and Blogs do not give you an Indian perspective i.e. raw materials used in US are not available in India etc

What we Do ?
We are an online portal that delivers at your DOORSTEP a DIY kit that will have all the required materials and instructions (for a particular craft or hobby) to help you make/learn/create/design things you love.

Open Mic: Spark a Startup - Ideate , Design , Validate!
To aspiring entrepreneurs, who at some point of time thought of starting up but got overwhelmed by the loads of contraditing gyaan, jargon and processes of the industry. This session is to provide some ready made raw material to get started without any risk involved by introducing of an Idea book - Startup Sparks : Ideas visualized as Designs.
It’s okay to take baby steps , but give it a couple of shots and who knows you may hit the bull’s eye! And No, you don’t Need to be a technologist to startup!

With this session, by the means of introducing my new book - Startup Sparks , I wish to remind aspiring entrepreneurs about their power of creation , regardless of technology and so called qualifications.

My goal with “Startup Sparks” is to share some startup ideas and create an actionable guide for aspiring entrepreneurs. Having experience of both - being in the corporate as well as startup community , I came across many people with great skills but while some needed motivation, other’s needed someone to ideate and paint the picture. Being an ideator & designer has helped me in terms of conceptualizing my ideas into something presentable, which gives a huge morale boost to get started. That’s what I am here to share with all those who need it.

Having something visual or logical helps one validate their idea, be it a Mock up, MVP (minimum viable product) or even a Business Model Canvas at times. This book has some of my own ideas that I have designed from scratch and are readily available for anyone who relates with them to get started.

What I wish to convey through this initiative is that -
‘Entrepreneurship is something you don’t need to qualify any criteria for, it comes from within and there is no good or bad time. It can make you very strong if you continue your journey even if the routes change from time to time.‛

Launchpad: HereNow- Local Communications

HereNow is about people here and now. There are many social networking and publishing products out there but there seems to be a big unfulfilled gap. It is trivial nowadays for me to send a message to someone across the globe, to stay in touch with friends from college who are all on different continents. But while distances of thousands of miles have been rendered insignificant, the distance of a few meters or hundreds of meters is as unsurmountable as ever. There is no way (until now) for us to reach out to people nearby, who share the same geographical location as us.

Location is very important to our existence. It determines how we behave, how we live, where we work, where we eat, where we sleep, how we bond, what hobbies we pursue and our day to day challenges. It would not be a long-shot to say that we share a lot of similarities with people we are surrounded by, even if we don’t know them personally. We (at HereNow) wish to connect people with each other based on this parameter of their existence.

Open Mic: CrowdStudio - a curated graphic design platform for startups
Don’t have an in-house design team? Let me introduce a very easy way for startups and small businesses to get their graphic design done.

CrowdStudio is a platform specially for startups and small businesses to find quality design for affordable prices.

a) It’s curated crowdsourcing - every designer in the CrowdStudio community is handpicked. Amateurs are filtered out, ensuring design quality.

b) It has a growing range of design categories, from logos to banner ads to book covers to poster design.

c) Unlimited revisions and private one-on-one chats with the designers, in case you aren’t yet sure what you’re looking for. There is no obligation to accept a design, even the winning design, until you’re satisfied with it.

d) A 100% money back guarantee. Normally we try to avoid this because, obviously, it means that the client didn’t find what they were looking for. We do everything we can to fix it, but if you’re still not satisfied, we give 100% money back, no questions asked.

Aside from this, CrowdStudio has all the things you’d expect of a crowdsourcing site, like budget-friendly pricing and quick turnaround time.

Hello there! I’d like to launch my book “Couchsurfing Diaries” which is a crowdsourced book on Couchsurfing stories around the globe.

I am an avid traveller and have backpacked across Europe and India. I’d like to share thoughts about my journey and adventures.

This session is to propose a better understanding of the two online concepts Couchsurfing and Workaway. Couch surfing is a site that encourages travellers to connect with each other. A traveller can use this network and request to stay at the home of a resident of the country he is travelling to for free.

Work away is a site that encourages travel and work. It is a community of people who require helping hands across the globe and would take care of stay and food expenses in exhange for some handy work.

These experiences are rich in constructive connections, mutual trust and learning. I’d like to share this awareness.

The objective of this is to spread awareness of these concepts and make them understand the value of travel, connections, communities, culture and learning through experience.

Open Mic: Startup Diagnostics: Reasons why startups can fail
New and Innovative startups are in the limelight more often than not – but about 80% of tech startups fail in the long run. Even those that make it big initially lose momentum and transcend from a potential empire into an entity of the past. They say you need to eliminate the fear of failure and take all risks to build a great startup, but that does not imply you stop looking for the traps. In this talk we analyze where startups fall short – be it lack of vision or rather bad timings – we will carry out detailed diagnostic of what you need to do or avoid in order to stand out while others perish.

Construkt Stage: Machine Learning in Production - Challenges in combining Scala with Java
Startups attempting to deploy machine learning algorithms in production face many challenges. Most algorithms do not work as expected, and developers spend a lot of time and effort trying to integrate machine learning code with other parts of the system. This talk highlights some of the challenges that we faced and how we overcame them. We hope our experience will help other startups. This talk will present our experiences when we deployed machine learning algorithms in production. We highight our experiences when we tried to combine Java implementations with Scala implementations in a SaaS Product. We describe why we choose the lambda architecture and how java and scala developers co-worked to build a complex system.

People fear change, People fear the unknowns. Giants are bieng forced to consume the Dwarves. Complex seems uninvited. And a mysterious group of people seem to be in charge - The Makers. But little do we know that we are all already a part of this revolution. The tools, the weapons, are already with us.

It doesn’t matter what language you speak, whether it be Javascript or Python, Compiled or Interpreted, Frontend or Backend - Today’s world allows you to make wonders with anything.

We can control everything with the very knowledge we have. All it requires is a bit of tinkering & bit more of curiousity.

Construkt Stage: Get high on art

Do you need to be an artist to appreciate art and beauty? The obvious answer is a no. But how many of us really take the time and effort to not merely look at art, but actually appreciate it for all it’s beauty, complexity, minimalism and honesty? What would be the impact of a lifestyle where we make active choices to appreciate art and help nurture it in our society? These are just some of the questions that have bothered us and we hope to discuss them with you too in the hope of ushering in some kind of change in the way we view the world today.

The most beautiful thing about Art is that it is interactive.
What the artist creates is only one part of the process. The rest depends on what you as a viewer brings to it. How do YOU see it? How do YOU interact with it? Maybe you will see it in a way that the artist did not even imagine. This makes Art infinite. What you can get from it depends entirely on who you are.

Open Mic: How do we extend IoT and Wearables to Pets?

The talk is a presentation of my learnings from a recent project done where my work was to conceptualise wearable technology for pets. In the current age of Internet of things and Wearable Technology, there is a radical shift in designing products and experiences, objects today learn to adapt themselves to human behaviour. Because of this change, it is now possible for our pets to be a part of our networked society. What should be our approach when looking at a non-human species as our user group? and how shall we design fo rthem, what is the framework/guidelines that we should keep in mind. How is it different from designing for humna beings and why shall we extend technology to th enon-human user group.

The talk covers design guidelines as an outcome of my learnings, for wearables and IoT for pets, and also briefly talks about the relevance of including pets to our data ecosystem.

We aim to create reflection around our decisions as individuals which we otherwise make without thinking about the consequences.

There are three objectives associated with my session.

1) Provide a deeper insight into the most disscussed concept or rather a vision in the technological world.
What will happen when the things surrounding us, homes and cities that we live in will all become smart.

2) Provide a technological base to start off in designing an IOT product.

3) Demonstrate a working IOT based system (E-Health Monitoring System), which I designed for my BE project and how this system is scalable and useful for improving the quality of patient care in rural and urban areas of our country.

The session will start off by defining and understanding the vision of IOT, how it’s gonna transform our lives and then once we have a good understanding of the subject I will touch the technical aspects that one require to implement and realize the full potential of IOT. Technical aspects would include understanding the domain of Wireless Sensor Networks, hardware and software platforms and some of the wireless communication technologies like ZigBee which are used in the IOT field.
At the end I will demonstrate an IOT based system called “E-Health Monitoring System ” which I have devloped as my BE project. After attending the session you will have a greater understanding of the topic and will find yourself in a position to start designing your own IOT based system/product.

There is a common myth that it is better to be a specialist rather than a generalist and that specialists are more successful that generalists. The objecitve of my talk will be to give the audience an insight into both these kind of species and to bust any myths regarding them. It will also help the audience identify as to which species they belong.

Are you a specialist? Brilliant at something? Or do you just consider yourself as one because the world prefers a specialist? Well, it’s time you find out. In this session we’ll start with what these two species exactly are, analyse their traits, discuss where they fit best and much more and in the process you can figure out who you truly are so that you can bring out the best in yourself.
